In 2017, SPECTRUM helped establish the Southampton Hate Crime Network (Southampton & South Hampshire Hate Crime Network as of January 2022). In June 2024, by way of decision of our members, it was renamed to Partners Against Hate. The network is a partnership of over 50 community and statutory organisations, tackling all forms of Hate Crime across the city and surrounding areas. Our aim is to increase community cohesion by having all sectors involved in providing support to Hate Crime victims and raising awareness.
This video outlines what support our network provides to those affected by Hate Crime.
Since the network started tackling Hate Crime over three years ago, these are some of our key accomplishments –
To coincide with National Hate Crime Awareness Week 2018 (from the 13th to the 20th of October), we worked with local marketing agency Carswell Gould to launch the ‘Love Don’t Hate’ campaign. The campaign is aimed at counteracting Hate Crime with a positive message about acceptance and celebrating diversity.
In February 2020, we piloted Hate Crime education sessions for local Young People. Pupils from The Cedar School (for Disabled People) were invited to SPECTRUM to take part in a number of activities, each improving their understanding of Hate Crime.
In spring 2020 we worked with The Cedar School and Solent University to create anti Hate Crime posters.
As part of National Hate Crime Awareness Week 2020 (from the 10th to the 17th of October) the network arranged for two virtual discussions to be held. The discussions were a chance for local community groups to share their views on the issue of Hate Crime, and provide awareness and information to the general public.

Since Autumn 2021, our Hate Crime network has been hosting regular online awarenesss sessions, to inform the general public about the 5 different strands of Hate Crime.
During National Hate Crime Awareness Week 2021, the network was pleased to talk on local radio station Unity 101 about the network’s achievements throughout the year. You can listen to the interview here:
To reflect the work our network does to support organisations in other regions of Hampshire, as of June 2024 we have formally changed our name to ‘Partners Against Hate‘.
Every quarter we hold meetings for all our members, to discuss and share ideas about the work we are doing to tackle Hate Crime. Click here to watch our May 2022 meeting.

A Hate Crime is any criminal offence that is, or perceived to be, motivated by hostility towards someone’s identity.
It can be based on a wide range of individual characteristics, including the 5 protected characteristics;
Anything like physical assault, criminal damage or theft, that is targeted at someone because of their identity, is classed as a Hate Crime. A number of these offences have seen perpetrators receive prison sentences and Hate Crime can regularly appear on Social Networking sites, in the form of cyberbullying or offensive messaging. All offences can have a severe impact on an individual, their family and their community.
Even if you don’t have one of the 5 protected characteristics you can still become a victim of Hate Crime:
